Overview

On 17 September 2025, WOCSO successfully conducted a one-day community event in Karan District to mark World Patient Safety Day (WPSD) under the theme of "Child and Newborn Safety.” The event aimed to increase awareness among caregivers, health workers, and the wider community on essential safety practices to reduce preventable harm during childbirth and early childhood.

A total of 70 participants attended, including young mothers, pregnant/nursing women, community health workers, schoolchildren, teachers, and local leaders. The event was conducted in Somali and tailored to be accessible and culturally relevant to the participants.

Activities Conducted

1. Educational Sessions:

Local midwives and nurses led sessions on safe pregnancy, delivery practices, newborn hygiene, immunization, and early childhood care. Simple, illustrated materials were distributed.

2. Storytelling & Community Dialogue:

Mothers shared real-life experiences related to pregnancy and childbirth, fostering peer learning and open discussion. Male elders and local officials participated, highlighting community responsibility.

3. Children’s Engagement Program:

Over 10 children from local schools took part in drawing and storytelling activities centered on the theme "My Healthy Start.” All participants enjoyed interactive learning through songs and games.

4. Visibility & Media:

WPA banners and logos were displayed throughout. The event was promoted on WOCSO’s social media channels using WPA’s campaign hashtags. WPA was acknowledged in all public remarks and printed materials.
